5th Aaina concluded successfully!

Thank you all for a powerful and beautiful 5th Aaina! Thank you for making it possible to create a unique space for the multiple artistic expressions of South Asian women.

We extend gratitude to the following: Chaya for co-presenting and co-organizing Aaina, as well as for producing the incredible Yoni Ki Baat and Community Speaks programs, and the must-have Chaya Zine “33 Cups of Chai.” Heartfelt thank you to all performers, participants, staff, and volunteers from Chaya. "Life in Marvelous Times": Cultural Work in the Racial Present

Tasveer is happy to welcome and co-sponsor the Ananya Dance Theatre group from Minneapolis for their performance of the original work "Kshoy/Decay!" Ananya Dance Theatre is based on the "contemporary interpretations of Odissi dance form, aesthetic traditions of Bengal, and practices of street theater created by women's groups." The dance performance is part of the closing program of the conference Life in Marvelous Times presented by the Race/Knowledge Project at the University of Washington. The conference opens with a keynote by Dr. Vijay Prashad on Thursday night and has a number of South Asian papers on Friday during the day.

Recepient of the Indian "National Film Award" for the best film on Environmental Issues.

Along the border of South-West region of Orissa, a hill named Niyamgiri is home to a tribe called the Dongria Kandha. The current plight of the Dongria Kandha tribe is weaved through a beautiful love story of a simple villager Bangaru and his love interest Singari. How the modern man's mind intrudes into their innocence to exploit the value of the tribe and the natural resources of the hills.

Niyamgiri hills, with its natural beauty of flora and fauna, is also rich of minerals which can be processed and produced as aluminum. The film starts with the controversial government's announcement for the take-over of the mountain, handing it to a multinational company.

The film is directed by the Legendary Oriya director, Prashanta Nanda
