Introducing Yoni Ki Baat 2011's Director Shahana Dattagupta

Shahana

Tasveer is very pleased to announce it's long time friend, past YKB performer, writer Shahana Dattagupta as Yoni Ki Baat 2011's director.

In Shahana's own words--

"They say women like to talk. It turns out that there are many important things women hardly talk about! Yoni ki Baat is a space for transformative expression; repeatedly, women have said it is the light and transformation in their lives outside Yoni-ki-Baat that is the real gift of participation! I am honored, humbled and thrilled to have a small hand in a big movement."

Shahana Dattagupta is a writer, actor, vocalist, visual artist and designer. Her first book Ten Avatars, released in AAINA 2010, portrays various aspects of womanhood. Over the last 6 years, she has consciously applied her creative channels to active community participation, donating her art to Utsav (2004), performing vocals in a musical ensemble for a Chaya fundraiser (2006), publicity writing for Tasveer's ISAFF (2008), performing in Yoni-ki-Baat (2007, 2008 and 2009) and in Pratidhwani's stage production Ek Tha Gadha (2009). In 2010 she co-founded a writing/publishing platform for transcultural works, through which the periodic zine Courageous Creativity is published, sourcing true stories of alternative thought from the (global) community.

Call for Participants for Yoni ki Baat 2011

(Please spread this call widely)

Yoni Ki Baat is a growing collection of authentic, bold, vivid, tender, powerful and poignant stories told by South Asian** women. Seattle’s Yoni Ki Baat has taken a creative life of its own in a unique space of sharing and community through sourcing and presenting true stories from local South Asian women. Each year our narratives shed light on the special challenges and opportunities experienced in the South Asian socio-cultural context, whether in native lands or in adopted homelands. Acknowledging female sexuality as an essential aspect of identity, experience and expression, this transformative space encourages South Asian women to express their challenges, hopes, dreams, breakdowns, breakthroughs, and aspirations for change on behalf of their bodies.

Yoni Ki Baat 2011 will be directed by Shahana Dattagupta, a Seattle-based writer, actor, vocalist, visual artist, and designer. It will be presented at AAINA (March 25, 26, 27), an annual South Asian Women’s Focus produced by Tasveer, with sponsorship from the Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas and SAAM.

When responding to this call, please email Shahana Dattagupta shahana.dattagupta@gmail.com, in which include (a) a short paragraph about yourself and why you may be interested in participating in Yoni ki Baat, and (b) a few sentences on a story-idea / topic you have in mind.

Women of all ages (18 and above), sexual/gender expressions and backgrounds with South Asian origins are encouraged to respond to this call. Remember, you do not have to be a “writer” or “performer” to participate! We are interested in untold and unheard stories, and everyone has stories! You will be coached and supported in story-telling / writing and performance through workshops and rehearsals.
