SUMMARY:Tasveer Author Meet with Sonora Jha
DESCRIPTION:Tasveer Author Meet with Sonora Jha\nHow to Raise a Feminist Son: Motherhood\, Masculinity\, and the Making of My Family\nNovelist & Professor Sonora Jha\, author of How to Raise a Feminist Son\, will be in conversation with Alka Kurian\, Associate Teaching Professor (UW) and Tasveer Board Member. \nThrough a series of courageous and moving essays\, a feminist-media scholar\, media professor\, and mother boldly reckons with the responsibility of raising her son across two patriarchal cultures\, and reveals what is at stake for all boys in today’s world\, in this timely work— part memoir\, part parenting manual. \n“We are raising our girls to imagine themselves as president\, yes\, but what would it look like if our men were raised to cry their hearts out\, in public\, at an injury\, at a tragedy\, or a moving work of art?” asks Sonora Jha. “What would that look like\, if not love?” In How to Raise a Feminist Son\, Jha directs these inquiries at herself\, as an immigrant mother of color reflecting back on the joys and challenges of raising her now-grown son\, Gibran; as well as to her readers\, ending each chapter with a list of to-dos that examine toxic masculinity\, internalized misogyny\, and the stories we tell ourselves and the boys we care for. \nKnown for her writing on the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements as well as her op-eds exposing gender inequality in America and her home country of India\, Jha brings a journalistic rigor to How to Raise a Feminist Son. The result is a charged and personal addition to the urgently needed conversation about masculinity and a must-read for parents—no matter the shape their family may take—as well as caregivers\, educators\, and feminists of all stripes.

SUMMARY:Tasveer Author Meet with Vijay Seshadri
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun conversation with Vijay Seshadri on Dec 1\, at 5 PM PST (8 PM EST). We’ll also be talking all about his new collection of poetry That Was Now\, This Is Then. \nIn That Was Now\, This Is Then\, Vijay Seshadri’s fourth poetry collection and first since winning the 2014 Pulitzer Prize\, Seshadri affirms his place as one of America’s greatest living poets. An exquisite blend of ironic intelligence\, emotional frankness\, radical self-awareness\, and complex humor\, That Was Now\, This Is Then takes on the planar paradoxes of time and space\, destabilizing highly tuned lyrics and elegies with dizzying turns in poems of unrequitable longing\, of longing for longing\, of longing to be found\, of grief. In these poems\, Seshadri’s speaker becomes the subject\, the reader becomes the writer\, and the multiplying refracted narratives yield an “anguish so pure it almost / feels like joy.” \nVijay Seshadri is the author of 3 Sections\, winner of the Pulitzer Prize; The Long Meadow\, winner of the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets; and Wild Kingdom. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and lives in Brooklyn\, New York. \nWe’re hosting this event as part of our #GivingTuesday fundraising for Tasveer. We greatly appreciate your support and generosity! And we will continue to work on bringing more year-round virtual programs to you. Thank you for your support! \nRegister here for the event.

SUMMARY:Tasveer Reads Karthika Naïr at the Seattle Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Come hear Karthika discuss Until the Lions\, her radical retelling of the Mahabharata\, at the Seattle Art Museum! Sunday\, December 8th from 2-3PM. Admission is free with an RSVP. The event will be held in the Plestcheeff Auditorium. \n“I was keen on exploring the human cost of war beyond victory and defeat\, on imagining and chronicling the testimonies of those for whom victory becomes a word without meaning. The families left shattered\, distraught siblings and wives\, a populace shorn of land and home\, those reduced to slavery or serfdom or the reign of another ruler\, who’d merely perpetuate an expedient social ‘order.’ And to examine too\, through these accounts\, how we can all too easily become complicit in conflict and injustice.” — Karthika Naïr \nSponsored by Tasveer Census
