Starting comedy during the pandemic\, she’s opened for touring comedians including Jena Friedman\, Hari Kondabolu\, Nimesh Patel and Kaneez Surka.\nRohini’s stories resonated with audiences across Washington (Bumbershoot\, Wet City Comedy Festival\, Upper Left Comedy Festival\, Emerald City Comic Con\, Geek Girl Con)\, Oregon\, Alaska\, and Omaha (Omaha Comedy Festival). Her work has gained attention from various sources\, including The Stranger’s A+P issue\, Seattle Gay News\, Indiaspora\, and NPR’s KUOW. You can also watch her perform at the pet themed comedy show\, Kitten Around. \nSaina Hussain (she/her) is an improvisor and ensemble member at Jet City Improv (JCI). The Tasveer Film Festival is the first and only South Asian film festival whose winning films are eligible for the Academy Awards. In 2023\, the Tasveer Film Festival became the first and only South Asian film festival whose winning films are eligible for the Oscars®. The Tasveer Film Market is the first market\, launched outside of South Asia\, that facilitates diasporic representation and filmmaking on a global level. In the past\, Tasveer and Netflix’s combined funding has been able to provide grants to filmmakers totaling more than $150K. This never-been done before the unprecedented event will be game-changing and draw headlines for the entire film community. \nWith the theme of connecting creatives and creating opportunities\, TFF&M’24 will feature a Co-Production Market\, a producer’s lab\, industry panels and a work-in-progress lab. Featured verticals will include a Feature\, Shorts & TV Series track with specific provisions for Narrative\, Documentary & LGBTQIA+ projects. \nThe market will cater to filmmakers\, producers\, distributors\, financiers\, sales agents\, legal\, talent managers\, festival directors\, and those looking to collaborate in the U.S. market and invest in projects from the diasporic community. She is the author of Narratives of Gendered Dissent in South Asian Cinemas (Routledge: 2014) and a co-editor of New Feminisms in South Asia: Disrupting the Discourse Through Social Media\, Film and Literature (Routledge: 2017). She is currently working on her third book Transnational Fourth Wave Feminisms: A Postcolonial Backlash (forthcoming 2023 Routledge). She has published extensively on South Asian film and feminism and was the founder-co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal Studies in South Asian Film and Media. Alka Kurian is the board president of Tasveer\, director of the Tasveer South Asian Literary Festival\, and host of the podcast South Asian Films & Books.

His memoir “Correctional” was published in 2021 with University of Wisconsin Press and he teaches creative writing at Tufts University. \nModerator: Prof. Shreerekha Subramanian is Professor of Humanities at University of Houston-Clear Lake. She was the first recipient of the Marilyn Mieszkuc Professorship in Women’s Studies established at her university (2008). Prof. Subramanian published the monograph\, Women Writing Violence: The Novel and Radical Feminist Imaginaries (Sage India 2013). She works on feminist and carceral texts from South Asian\, African American and diasporic traditions.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 11\, 2022\n 18:00 19:00 \nTasveer (map)\n\n\nTasveer proudly co-sponsors the book release of ‘The Kural’ \nThomas Hitoshi Pruiksmas presents a special publication day reading and discussion of The Kural (Beacon Press)\, his new translation of Tiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural\, a Tamil masterpiece of poetry and practical philosophy. On par with other world classics such as the Tao Te Ching\, The Kural has long been underserved by translators\, who tend to sacrifice its poetry for what they see as its ideas. This new translation draws on two decades of study under the Tamil scholar Dr. K. V. Ramakoti\, as well as on the poetic tradition of W. S. Merwin\, Wendell Berry\, William Carlos Williams\, and Denise Levertov\, to do justice to the genius of the original and the subtlety of its understanding of life. Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma appears in conversation with Archana Venkatesan\, who wrote the forward to his book.
