SUMMARY:Pride Month Special- Tasveer Reels: The Lonely Prince
DESCRIPTION:Pride Month Special- Tasveer Reels: The Lonely Prince\nThis Pride month\, join us for an exclusive screening of The Lonely Prince followed by a live Q&A session with the filmmakers Shivin and Sunny. \nDate: Friday\, June 10th \nTime: 5:00pm-6:30 pm PST \nInspired by the lack of Queer representation in traditional Indian settings\, Shivin and Sunny decided to go back to their roots and create a new tale with a queer leading character. The Lonely Prince is inspired by classic fairy tails\, but with one twist- its the Prince that needs saving this time. The film is built around this idea of self-acceptance\, which the Prince has struggled with his entire adult life. \nDirectors Shivin and Sunny grew up in a time where homosexuality was not accepted\, even in their household. Not having any mainstream representation of their struggles on-screen only made their fear of acceptance greater. That is why the two created this story in the form of a folk tale with a hope for it to be sent down from generation to generation. \nRegister NOW!

SUMMARY:Book Release: The Kural
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, January 11\, 2022\n 18:00 19:00 \nTasveer (map)\n\n\nTasveer proudly co-sponsors the book release of ‘The Kural’ \nThomas Hitoshi Pruiksmas presents a special publication day reading and discussion of The Kural (Beacon Press)\, his new translation of Tiruvalluvar’s Tirukkural\, a Tamil masterpiece of poetry and practical philosophy. On par with other world classics such as the Tao Te Ching\, The Kural has long been underserved by translators\, who tend to sacrifice its poetry for what they see as its ideas. This new translation draws on two decades of study under the Tamil scholar Dr. K. V. Ramakoti\, as well as on the poetic tradition of W. S. Merwin\, Wendell Berry\, William Carlos Williams\, and Denise Levertov\, to do justice to the genius of the original and the subtlety of its understanding of life. Thomas Hitoshi Pruiksma appears in conversation with Archana Venkatesan\, who wrote the forward to his book.

SUMMARY:Tasveer Author Meet: In Conversation with Tahmina Anam of "The Startup Wife"
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, July 24\, 2021\n 13:00 14:00 \nTasveer (map)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNovelist Tahmima Anam reads from her novel\, “The Startup Wife” and appears in conversation with Shahina Piyarali \nCo-presented with Elliott Bay Book Company \nA novelist who has garnered praise and awards for her first three novels\, all set around and amidst the turmoil\, trauma\, and transition coming from Bangladesh’s creation as a country\, Dhaka-born Tahmima Anam virtually joins us from her present home in London to read from and discuss her very different new novel\, The Startup Wife (Scribner). When we say ‘different’ we mean story and plot\, not the quality of writing. If anything\, Tahmima Anam’s writing genius is even more evident here\, in a novel that has a seriousness about meaning\, purpose\, and love central to things\, but also has some of the most wicked\, scathing\, brilliant wit we have seen anywhere in some time. The startup world of tech companies do lend themselves to that – and Tahmima Anam does not disappoint. “This scathing and brutally funny novel skewers startup culture and workaholism with the perfect story for our precarious moment. Tahmima Anam has written an absolute page-turner full of heart\, wit\, and insight about obsession\, how we treat others\, and when we stand up for ourselves. A revealing depiction of ways people gain power through work—and lose it.”—V.V. Ganeshananthan. “Fresh\, funny\, brave\, savage\, smart. Tahmima Anam hits every note perfectly in this novel about our new reality and the age-old problems of men and women that no app can fix.”—Kamila Shamsie. Tahmima Anam’s earlier novels are A Golden Age\, The Good Muslim\, and The Bones of Grace. \nJoining Tahmima Anam in conversation will be Tasveer’s board member Shahina Piyarali\, a contributing writer to Shelf Awareness\, and presently on the board of Graywolf Press and Hugo House. \n\n\n\n\n Event Details

SUMMARY:Tasveer Author Meet with Sonora Jha
DESCRIPTION:Tasveer Author Meet with Sonora Jha\nHow to Raise a Feminist Son: Motherhood\, Masculinity\, and the Making of My Family\nNovelist & Professor Sonora Jha\, author of How to Raise a Feminist Son\, will be in conversation with Alka Kurian\, Associate Teaching Professor (UW) and Tasveer Board Member. \nThrough a series of courageous and moving essays\, a feminist-media scholar\, media professor\, and mother boldly reckons with the responsibility of raising her son across two patriarchal cultures\, and reveals what is at stake for all boys in today’s world\, in this timely work— part memoir\, part parenting manual. \n“We are raising our girls to imagine themselves as president\, yes\, but what would it look like if our men were raised to cry their hearts out\, in public\, at an injury\, at a tragedy\, or a moving work of art?” asks Sonora Jha. “What would that look like\, if not love?” In How to Raise a Feminist Son\, Jha directs these inquiries at herself\, as an immigrant mother of color reflecting back on the joys and challenges of raising her now-grown son\, Gibran; as well as to her readers\, ending each chapter with a list of to-dos that examine toxic masculinity\, internalized misogyny\, and the stories we tell ourselves and the boys we care for. \nKnown for her writing on the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements as well as her op-eds exposing gender inequality in America and her home country of India\, Jha brings a journalistic rigor to How to Raise a Feminist Son. The result is a charged and personal addition to the urgently needed conversation about masculinity and a must-read for parents—no matter the shape their family may take—as well as caregivers\, educators\, and feminists of all stripes.

Partnering with API Chaya\, Community Speaks was originally imagined as a forum for South Asians impacted by violence to break the isolation they have experienced by sharing their story. Over the years\, many people have shared their stories\, including young people\, elders\, all genders\, and from various South Asian ethnic backgrounds. \n⏰ Shows on April 10 & 11\nApril 9th show will follow the Tasveer Gala. SUMMARY:Tasveer Author Meet with Vijay Seshadri
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fun conversation with Vijay Seshadri on Dec 1\, at 5 PM PST (8 PM EST). We’ll also be talking all about his new collection of poetry That Was Now\, This Is Then. \nIn That Was Now\, This Is Then\, Vijay Seshadri’s fourth poetry collection and first since winning the 2014 Pulitzer Prize\, Seshadri affirms his place as one of America’s greatest living poets. An exquisite blend of ironic intelligence\, emotional frankness\, radical self-awareness\, and complex humor\, That Was Now\, This Is Then takes on the planar paradoxes of time and space\, destabilizing highly tuned lyrics and elegies with dizzying turns in poems of unrequitable longing\, of longing for longing\, of longing to be found\, of grief. In these poems\, Seshadri’s speaker becomes the subject\, the reader becomes the writer\, and the multiplying refracted narratives yield an “anguish so pure it almost / feels like joy.” \nVijay Seshadri is the author of 3 Sections\, winner of the Pulitzer Prize; The Long Meadow\, winner of the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets; and Wild Kingdom. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and lives in Brooklyn\, New York. \nWe’re hosting this event as part of our #GivingTuesday fundraising for Tasveer. We greatly appreciate your support and generosity! And we will continue to work on bringing more year-round virtual programs to you. Thank you for your support! \nRegister here for the event.
